How we collect, use, and protect your information across the Chitin apps and the chitin.net website. Last updated: April 2026.
Chitin ("we", "us", "our") operates the Chitin Avatar (iOS), Chitin Phone (iOS), Chitin Desktop (macOS), Chitin Bridge (macOS), and the chitin.net website. This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your information across all of these apps and services.
When you first open the Chitin Avatar, Chitin Phone, or Chitin Desktop app, a random device identifier is generated to create your anonymous account. No name, email, phone number, or personal information is required to use these apps.
The web surface at web.chitin.net and the Chitin harness for macOS create an account from an email address and a password, because they sign in rather than identify a single device. We use your email address to sign you in, to let you recover access, and to send you notices about Chitin itself — a service problem, a security issue, or a change that affects how your installation works.
You can also opt in to occasional Chitin updates when you create your account. That checkbox is unchecked by default and the choice is yours; declining it does not limit anything. We do not use your email address for advertising or any marketing unrelated to Chitin, we do not sell it, and we do not share it with third parties for their own purposes.
We track daily message counts to enforce free tier limits. This data is associated with your anonymous device ID, not your personal identity.
If you subscribe to Chitin Plus, we store your subscription tier and expiration date to provide premium features.
If you submit feedback through any Chitin app or the website, we store your message, optional email address, and the app or platform you submitted from.
Chitin offers multiple connection modes, each with different privacy characteristics.
Messages are sent to our relay server (relay.chitin.chat), which forwards them to the appropriate AI provider for response generation. Messages are processed in transit and not stored after the response is delivered.
Your device connects directly to your own machine. Nothing reaches Chitin's servers and we have no access to these conversations. Because the traffic stays on your own network, it is protected by network isolation and by the paired-device approval you granted on your machine.
So you can reach your machine while away from home, messages pass through Chitin's relay. The connection is encrypted in transit (TLS) and the relay stores no conversation content. We do not read or retain your messages.
Messages are sent directly from your device to your chosen AI provider using your own API key. We have no access to these conversations.
Chitin is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with information, please contact us at support@chitin.net.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
